Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Dental veneers, which are usually stain-resistant porcelain, are wafer-thin shells that cover the front surfaces of your teeth to change their appearance. Dr. Shapiro crafts each custom veneer using digital impressions of your teeth, so they fit perfectly when he cements them into place.

You might decide to get one veneer for a problematic tooth that stands out among the rest. However, many people choose to get six to eight veneers at a time for a more uniform or symmetrical smile. Veneers withstand the normal pressures that apply to teeth in the front of your mouth, but you’re better off choosing crowns to cover molars.

How can veneers change the appearance of my smile?

You can use veneers to improve the way your smile looks in many ways as they can conceal numerous defects. Veneers can cover natural inconsistencies or certain areas of damage that only alter your teeth cosmetically. A few common imperfections that veneers cover are:

  • Cracks
  • Chips
  • Shorter-than-average teeth
  • Wide gaps between teeth
  • Pointed teeth
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Discoloration or stains

Dr. Shapiro works with you to decide which damage to cover and how many veneers you need to do so. It might not seem like much, but achieving a more beautiful smile with veneers can give you a major boost in self-confidence.

What is the process of getting veneers?

Getting veneers at Complete Dental Care of Jamesburg usually involves more than one visit. During your preliminary visit, you discuss your goals with Dr. Shapiro. He might recommend getting braces or Invisalign® before you get veneers if your teeth are particularly crooked.

Dr. Shapiro takes digital X-rays of your teeth to check for signs of disease or decay that could interfere with the process. You need to treat complications like these before you get your veneers.

Once your teeth are clear of health complications, Dr. Shapiro removes about half a millimeter from your tooth enamel using a grinding tool. He then takes digital impressions of your teeth to use for creating your veneers.

When your custom veneers are ready, Dr. Shapiro evaluates the fit before cleaning your teeth thoroughly and bonding the veneers to them using resin cement. He uses an ultraviolet light to dry the cement, and you can leave the office shortly after.
